Bears, Babies, and Why No One Remembers You

Bears, Babies, and Why No One Remembers You Bears, Babies, and Why No One Remembers You Do I know a mechanic? No. Do I own the Yellow Pages? No. Does anyone in my extended family have anyinkling of what to do with a car besides put it in Drive? No.Every time we drive by this giant bear statue, my kids go wild with questions. How did they carve the bear? Can we buy a bear for our front lawn? What kind of wood is the bear made from? Can we get a chainsaw? Can you say indelible branding? The first thought I had, of course, was of that wrench-holding giant bear statue. I looked them up on Google, gave them a call, and my car is now in their hands (or paws.)This is the new world of commerce. That bear serves the saatkorn function as the Etrade Baby. It burns into your mind and plants the seed from which future decisions spring. There are still no great ways to look up extremely local and contextually nuanced information on the web. Since we dont tend to use the Yellow Pages anymore, what are we left with?We now rely more on our memories than ever before. The company that wins is the one that makes a memory. Sure, our memory issupplementedby a massive amount of information on the web and communication with our friends online. But what creates the impetus for a search? We research online, but how do we know what to research? In this case, it was from a bear that made a giant impression on my kids which then shaped andinfluencedmy behavior as a consumer. Recruiter.com doesnt have an equivalent iconic force and maybe it needs to. Maybe each company and even each of us needs something very unique. Not a brand, but a memory-maker.

How to Build Trust on Your Team

How to Build Trust on Your TeamHow to Build Trust on Your TeamA senior board member once chastised our executive kollektiv with, You dont trust each other enough to succeed. We rankled at this indictment lobbed in by someone who was not part of the daily workings of our firm. It turns out, he was right. An outside observer would have noticed broken trust links in a number of the relationships in this group. Until those links were forged, we flailed. The CEO brought in an industrial psychologist to help the team, but the effort fizzled. Finally, to the credit of the CEO and board, they took action to remove the individuals who refused to set their personal differences aside in pursuit of the mission. Once the dust settled from the changes, the remaining members of the group aligned around the difficult issues of developing and implementing a bold new strategy. While we did not recognize it at the time, the subsequent two years of trial and ultimate success were pivotal moments in our careers. Whether you are CEO or a front-line supervisor, trust in some form is the difference-maker when it comes to performance. It is also one of those squishy topics that busy managers do not think about on a daily basis. Rarely is the action strengthen trust with and between my team members singled out on an annual performance review or on a list of objectives. That is too bad because the trust issue should be front and center in the mind of the manager every day and in every encounter. The failure to engender trust with your co-workers, peers, and team members is a formula for stress, strife, and suboptimal results. Effective managers and great leaders recognize that building trust is a complex and sometimes slow process. They work hard at it every single day. 15 Power Tips to Build Trust on Your Team Give your trust to get trust. Most people will move mountains to repay this simple but powerful gesture of respect.Link individual and team priorities to the firms strategies and goals. People thrive when they have context for their work and its importance to the bigger picture.Keep your team informed of the firms financial results. Whether your firm is publicly-traded or privately-held, the time you invest in explaining and talking about actual results will be greatly appreciated. Your transparency suggests you trust your team members with this important information. Redouble your efforts to understand and support the career aspirations of your team members. Nothing says I care more than investing time and effort in helping someone achieve a goal. Caring begets trust.Show your vulnerabilities. If you make a mistake, admit it. If you are interested in feedback on your performance, ask for it and then do something positive with the input. Make certain to loop back and thank the team members who provided constructive input.Regularly give away your authority. If you run a regular operations meeting, rotate responsibility to develop the agenda and lead the m eeting. As often as possible, delegate decision-making to individuals or teams. Any action to show trust by allowing others to decide and act will strengthen their trust in you. Shine the spotlight brightly on everyone else. No one trusts the manager who constantly elbows her way to the center of the spotlight for the teams accomplishments. Step back into the shadows and your team members will repay you many times over.Take the heat for team member mistakes. When something goes wrong, get to the center of the spotlight and keep your team members safely out of sight.Always match your words with your actions. The do must match the tell or, your credibility will suffer, and trust will fade. And yes, everyone on your team is keeping score. Beware of diluting the value of accountability. Every individual must be accountable for his or her actions and outcomes. Exceptions to this rule destroy credibility and derail your efforts to build trust.Do not let the difficult issues linger. Rememb er, everyone is watching you, and the clock on your credibility is running. While your team members have empathy for you in navigating the big issues, they expect you to do your job so they can do theirs.Hold team leaders accountable for building trust with and between their team members. Your team leads are a direct reflection of you as the overall leader. Teach them well and hold them accountable to the same standards you hold yourself to. Teach your teams how to talk, debate and decide. Instead of demanding easy consensus, teach your team members how to discuss alternative ideas and approaches in pursuit of the best approach. When an employee makes a mistake, encourage them to share the lessons learned. It goes double for your own mistakes. Use your errors to teach others.Always operate from a clear, visible set of values. If your firm lacks clear values, define the values that describe the aspirational and acceptable behaviors for your team members. Teach and reference the values constantly. The Bottom-Line for Now Trust is built over time and based on many exposures. You have a thousand opportunities every single day to engender or endanger trust. Work hard to win each one of these small but important moments of trust.

Things To Consider Before Making A Career Change

Things To Consider Before Making A Career ChangeThings To Consider Before Making A Career ChangeWe all need change sometimes, even when it comes to our jobs. The daily routine gets boring or the work loses its interest, and we begin to wonder what else is out there. For some people simply switching jobs is enough to get them excited about their career again. But for others a more dramatic shift, such as getting a job in a new industry, is needed. However, aside from the usual risks associated with taking a new job, a career change has its own challenges that job seekers need to consider before jumping into unfamiliar waters.Switching careers requires more research and preparation than an ordinary job search. If youre considering a career change, here are four things to put on your to-do list before making the leapResearch the state of the new industryIf youre excited by the challenges a new field provides, its important to have a firm understanding of what working in that industry wou ld be like. Find out what companies are leaders within the industry and the type of work they do. Search the career sections of their sites to see what types of positions they have to offer. Also, research overall hiring trends in the industry to determine if opportunities are growing or shrinking. For example, a 2015 survey by LinkedIn listed the fields that the most people joined or left last year. Topping the list of expanding industries was technology, healthcare and oil and energy while professional services, education, government and the nonprofit sectors saw the biggest declines. If you discover a large number of employees are running from the new career youre considering, find out why. Signs that industry-wide layoffs or company closures are forcing employees to find new jobs might mean you should rethink joining that particular industry.Get back to basicsDepending on how long youve been a part of the labor force, the majority of the experiences and skills you have listed on y our resume could be very industry-specific. But that doesnt mean you lack the qualities other types of employers are looking for.A 2015 report by Burning Glass took a look at job postings from over 40,000 different sources and determined which baseline skills are important to each career. While certain skills were specific to their industries, several were valuable across the job market. Communication skills, for example, were the No. 1 skill employers looked for in 13 of the 15 fields included in the survey.Make a list of basic characteristics and strengths you could bring to any job. Then look at current job postings in the new industry youre exploring to verify that your qualities will help you succeed. Consider also taking a personality test like Myers-Briggs. This can help both you and employers identify your personal strengths and how they make you a better employee.Redefine your career pathA career change means a new career path. The plans and goals you once set for yourself may no longer apply to your new job.Instead of waiting a few years to see if your new career will work out long-term, take the time to research what options are available in that field. Technology has gifted all types of job seekers with career exploration tools that give them a better idea of what their future can look like.Utilize social media to find out what connections you already have in the new industry. Send out emails and schedule informal meetings asking for advice on the best way to be successful in the field. Be specific about what you want to know or what concerns you have about endeavoring on this career change. That way youll be well-informed about how to best enter and succeed in your new job.Try things out by freelancingWhen in doubt, try it out. There are plenty of opportunities for part-time freelancing across various industries that create a chance to evaluate how well you fit into a given career. Freelancing allows you to explore new industries, see how well you r skill set translates and get an idea for how much youll enjoy working in a new field all without having to quit your current job.The added sense of security that a steady paycheck provides while you figure things out allows you to make clearer and better decisions about what type of job you really want. It removes the pressure to take a position because you financially have to.If all goes well with your freelancing gigs, you can confidently make the transition from your old industry to a new one. If things are bumpier than you expected youll have a deeper understanding of what you need to learn to be successful.Switching jobs can be stressful, and switching industries is even more so. But, with the right preparation, you can make your decision with confidence. These four steps will help you survive your career switch and land on the right path. What other considerations are important when making a big career change? How to stay sane during your job search according to Ladders CEO

How to stay sane during your job search according to Ladders CEOHow to stay sane during your job search according to Ladders CEOHow do you squeeze the most dollars and the best outcome out of the limited amount of time you have for your job search? If youve worked with sales, marketing or recruiting, youre familiar with the concept of the pipeline - the heap of opportunities or leads that you march through a process of assessment and persuasion in the hopes of creating new customers. Your job search, too, is a pipeline of opportunities that youll apply, assess, interview and qualify. Our goal is to have you receive, in the current hot economy, four to five offers at roughly the saatkorn time. In a downturn, wed settle for two, or even one, but so long as the partys going, lets have a ball and go for more.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreIn order to generate four to five offers, y oull need to interview for 15 well-suited roles. Which means reviewing or qualifying 30 to 40, which means applying or pitching yourself to upwards of one hundred opportunities over the next six months. While that might sound daunting, it comes down to six applications per week over four months. Its a feasible accomplishment.Occasionally, we will come across professionals who start out with an absolutely unsustainable pace of applying to fifty to one hundred jobs per week. This level of application and over-focus on the beginning of the pipeline is not effective, its not a pace you can maintain, and its not emotionally rewarding. To generate six applications, pitches or connections per week, youll review a couple dozen opportunities that are in the ballpark each week of your search. What counts as a lead?Reviewing relevant, targeted job postings - something weve been doing for members at Ladders for over fifteen years.In-person or phone conversations with your network about open rol es at their firm.Targeted reviews of companies in your industry.Responding to relevant recruiter outreach. Each of these counts as generating leads for your job search. The initial pitch or application is as simple as tell me about what types of roles you might be looking to add at your company in my area, requesting an introduction to a hiring manager at a company, taking a call with a recruiter, or applying for a job and doing the initial follow up.Qualifying a role is one of the most essential tasks of the job search. Qualifying means applying appropriate scrutiny to each role to determine whether or not it is truly worth the investment of time and effort to continue with the process for that particular role. You should ask if the role is right for you, the compensation is right, and the career step is rightAsk for the three most important factors for success in the role. As we discuss in Ladders 2019 Interviews Guide, this should fasson the core of your interview strategy.Confirm that compensation and other arrangements (full-time or contractor, on-premise or remote, lots of travel or none) match your lifestyle and economic goals.Does this role move your career forward? In the way, youd anticipated or desired? To the extent, it varies a little bit or a lot from what youd envisioned, is that variance an acceptable trade-off for you?The amount of time you spend on each opportunity increases as you proceed through the pipeline, so qualifying an opportunity upfront means saving dozens of wasted hours later on.Inevitably, our ego and the nice feeling of being wanted sometimes persuade us to continue with an opportunity that just isnt right but that feels great - the recruiter is amiable and flattering, the brand name is big and impressive, the work provokes your curiosity - but you know in your heart of hearts that its not the right job for you. The earlier you can catch yourself andprevent yourself from allotting time to fruitless searches the better.Next week , Ill cover the right number of opportunities to keep in your pipeline at any one time. Have a great week in your searchIm rooting for you,Marc Cenedella, Founder

Allied health careers Not just doctors and nurses

Allied health careers Not just doctors and nurses Allied health careers Not just doctors and nursesPosted September 28, 2012, by Vivien LuuWhen we think of careers in health, many of us immediately think of doctors and nurses. After all, theyre the ones who keep us alive if were ever rushed to the hospital, right? While this is indeed the case, have you ever considered what happens after the initial emergency? Who helps get you back on your feet after a nasty accident or illness? The answer is allied health workers.Allied health professionals make up approximately 20 per cent of Australias health workforce, and are comprised of a variety of occupations. These range from dietitians and psychologists to chiropractors and orthoptists. What is allied health?Allied health practitioners aim to restore, maintain and optimise a patients physical, sensory, cognitive and psychological function. Now this might sound like a lot of technical jargon so lets take a look at an example. After emerging f rom a coma, a stroke patient may need to relearn how to walk, eat and speak again. So a team of allied health professionals is called in. The nutritionist assesses the patients dietary needs and prescribes additional supplements, the physiotherapist works with the patient to improve physical function and movement, while the speech pathologist helps the patient with their swallowing and language skills. As you can see, it takes a lot more than just doctors and nurses when it comes to health care, and allied health professionals each help with a specific aspect of a patients health and wellbeing. How do you become an allied health professional?Firstly, youll need to be qualified and have a university degree or other qualification under your belt. Part of your degree will also involve doing placements to gain practical experience. In terms of personality, youll most likely be a person who enjoys helping and supporting others and youll need strong interpersonal skills and an ability to rel ate to others. This is important as allied health professionals spend a lot of their time one-on-one with their clients. Having an aptitude for science will also be useful in this career path. What career opportunities are there? While there are a variety of allied health careers to choose from, heres a closer look at some specialties.Occupational therapistAs an occupational therapist or OT, your main focus is to improve a clients everyday functional abilities to ensure they live rich and fulfilling lives. This means helping clients with activities they want to do but may struggle with due to a disability, illness or injury. These can include activities of everyday life like self-care (bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, feeding) household chores (cooking, cleaning, shopping) community involvement, and work or study. You will work closely with clients to assess their capabilities and design a program that is tailored to their needs. On top of that, OTs are also responsible for pro viding assistive equipment to clients (such as wheelchairs), conducting home assessments and providing education to clients and their loved ones. Its an occupation that demands patience and flexibility but can be extremely rewarding. If you want to start off in occupational therapy as an assistant, you can begin your training with a Certificate IV in Allied Health Assistance (Occupational Therapy), which you can complete online.PhysiotherapistThere is a common misconception that physiotherapy is mostly about sports. And while some physios do work with elite athletes and professional teams, physiotherapy actually extends to a much wider range of clients. This can range from premature babies and children with cerebral palsy to patients recovering from major surgery or injuries. It can be a really rewarding career because you have the potential to impact on a patients quality of life, says physiotherapist Katherine Wong. For example I work in rehabilitierung and its really exciting to te ach somebody to walk again after theyve had a stroke.Physiotherapists use a range of treatments to reduce a patients physical pain and restore function to their limbs. Techniques may include mobilisation and manipulation of joints, massage and hydrotherapy. If you have an ability to inspire confidence and motivate others, and are genuinely interested in health and wellbeing, then consider physiotherapy as a career. You can also train to become a physiotherapy assistant by completing a Certificate IV in Allied Health Assistance (Physiotherapy).Speech pathologistDespite what many people think, speech pathologists treat a whole range of individuals, not just those with stutters or speech impediments. Clients can include people of all ages who have difficulty with communication and/or swallowing. This might vary from babies struggling with breastfeeding to people who need to relearn how to speak after suffering a head injury or stroke. As a speech pathologist, your day-to-day tasks will v ary greatly depending on the organisation you are employed at and the type of clients you treat. For instance, speech pathologists who work in hospitals will work with patients in a rehabilitative capacity assessing a patients swallowing function to ensure eating is geldschrank post-surgery or perhaps devising communication strategies for those undergoing cancer treatment. Meanwhile, speech pathologists who specialise in providing disability services may treat young children with autism or cerebral palsy to increase their communication skills and confidence.Regardless of where you end up as a speech path, youll need superior listening and interpersonal skills and an ability to tactfully approach a patients problems. An interest in language and communication is useful too.To train to become a speech pathology assistant, you can study a Certificate IV in Allied Health Assistance (Speech Pathology).Exercise physiologistContrary to what many people believe, exercise physiologists (EPs) are not personal trainers. Instead, theyre university-qualified experts in exercise therapy and rehabilitation. What most people dont realise is that exercise is a form of medicine, says exercise physiologist student Robyn Yin. Exercise physiologists basically prescribe exercise.EPs develop individualised exercise programs that are designed to prevent or manage chronic disease, injury or disability. Clients can include those with diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, arthritis and even depression. But its not just about tailoring exercises to a clients health condition. EPs also use counselling and motivational strategies to ensure clients commit to regular exercise on a long-term basis. As an EP you can work in a variety of different workplaces, ranging from hospitals and aged care centres to academies of sport and health promotion and fitness agencies. To become an exercise physiologist, you can study your Bachelor of Exercise and Sports Science (Clinical Exercise Physiology)b y distance education.Dietitian/NutritionistIf you think dietitians just help celebrities lose weight, then think again. Dietitians are, in fact, health professionals who apply the science of nutrition to improve the health of individuals and the community at large. This involves educating clients on the impact of diet, planning appropriate diets and meals for clients with medical conditions such as diabetes, and advising other healthcare professionals on the role of diet in health care and recovery management. In terms of where you can work, the opportunities are endless. You could work in a major hospital planning meals for the seriously ill, or you could work with children at schools, teaching them about nutrition and food. Where you take your career as a dietitian is really up to you.Nutritionists also work in the area of nutrition and can work in gyms, doctors clinics, complementary medicine clinics, sporting clubs, health food shops and hospitality, or as a nutritional counsello r or consultant. The educational requirements to become a nutritionist are less rigorous than for dietitians, as dietitians require a bachelor degree or more.If you have a deep appreciation for food and are genuinely interested in health and wellbeing, a career as a dietitian or nutritionist could be for you. We offer a range of nutrition courses that can be studied online.OrthoptistVery few people understand what orthoptists do, and chances are if you do, youve probably been treated by one. Orthoptists are essentially eye experts who diagnose eye movement disorders and imagination problems such as glaucoma and amblyopia. Unlike optometrists, orthoptists do not prescribe glasses. Instead they work closely with ophthalmologists (eye doctors), assessing and testing the vision of an ophthalmologists patients. They also screen the vision of school children to detect any vision disorders, can test for age-related eye conditions such as cataracts, and may help rehabilitate patients after a stroke or head injury. Orthoptists can recommend surgery if a patients condition requires it (but do not perform the surgery themselves), or will suggest exercises or therapy where appropriate.Orthoptist, Janine Sing, says its a challenging career but one that can make a real difference in peoples lives. Every day something is different. You go into work not knowing what to expect, she says. Being an orthoptist provides me with great opportunities to get out there in the health industry and make a difference.Orthoptists can work in private practice, hospitals and low vision clinics, or devote their time to research. The field is so small that there is always a demand for orthoptists. It is a very niche profession and there arent many of us out there, says Sing. Job-wise there are plenty of opportunities and so much room to grow.Allied health assistantIf you want to get into allied health without having to complete a university degree, you can also train to become a general allied h ealth assistant, or specialise in an area such as podiatry, by studying a Certificate III in Allied Health Assistanceor Certificate IV in Allied Health Assistance (Podiatry).See our full range of online health courses.Health ResourcesOccupational therapist sample resumeOccupational therapist sample cover letterCareer Insider StoriesSarah Key - Physiotherapist to the QueenInterested in becoming a?Business ManagerOffice AdministratorHuman Resources ManagerPractice ManagerOccupational Health and Safety (OHS) OfficerPopular Career Searcheshealth related university coursespostgraduate health courses onlinehow to become a health inspector in vicadvanced diploma of health science acupunctureenvironmental health officer courses onlineHealth CoursesCertificate III in Health AdministrationEnquire erreichbar Enquire OnlineCertificate III in Allied Health AssistanceEnquire Online Enquire OnlineCertificate IV in Allied Health Assistance (Nutrition and Di...Enquire Online Enquire OnlineBachelor o f Health Science (Nutrition and Exercise)Enquire Online Enquire Online Vivien LuuViv is a writer who enjoys researching and writing about creativity, how the human mind works, and neuro processes.
